people often ask us, “ Why build a Dome?” Geodesic domes have been around for a long time but still few people realize their advantages over square buildings. Conservation of energy is in high demand and these days people are looking for all kinds of ways to make square buildings more thermal efficient, from low E windows to increased insulating values but they are overlooking the most dramatic way to improve efficiency. A well built dome can be anywhere from 30 to 50 percent more thermal efficient than a square building comparing the same materials in a different configuration! The dome shape creates a thermal dish that maintains its temperature easier than a square. Most importantly it takes 25 percent less surface area to enclose and cover the equivalent floor space, the decreased surface area allows for less thermal exchange resulting in increased thermal efficiency.
Domes have structural advantages as well, they are particularly well suited for hurricane prone climates due to their aerodynamic shape.
